“College and Career Readiness”

Wellspring High School prepares students to be successful contributors in the interconnected and rapidly changing world. Our rigorous curriculum exposes students to inquiry, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

High school students pursue a career pathway in computer programming and web design. This career pathway leads students to create computer and mobile applications which can be marketed and sold. These exciting and practical fields were selected so that students become competent in technology and business applications as well as marketing and entrepreneurship. Furthermore, this career pathway prepares students to intern at companies, after which they will be eligible to take the Microsoft certification exam in Microsoft Programming in HTML or the Java and/or Python Programming.

Wellspring High School students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement (AP) courses in history, computer science, and the physical and social sciences.

In order to graduate from Wellspring High School, seniors must demonstrate their college and career readiness by completing a capstone project. This includes giving a presentation that highlights their high school learning experiences such as the senior internship, financial literacy, college/AP credits earned, and a resume. Additionally, students will present a capstone project. The capstone project is a senior exhibition which serves as a culminating academic and intellectual experience. It is designed to encourage critical thinking, problem solving, public speaking, research and media literacy, planning, and goal setting.

Our guidance counselor ensures students are prepared for post-secondary opportunities by providing access to career information, exploration, and advisement, as well as ongoing career and college counseling. Students also participate in career exploration experiences and activities.

Importance of Career and Technical Education in the 21st Century

Graduates of Wellspring High School can secure employment and/or an apprenticeship as a beginning programmer or computer support specialist.

Responsibilities include overseeing the daily performance of computer systems, assisting with resolving problems around computer software or hardware operation, entering commands, and observing system functioning to verify correct operations and detect errors.

Graduates of an associate's degree from a community college would have taken courses such as introduction to programming, data structure, web-based programming, object-oriented programming, and desktop publishing, and may have obtained programming certifications. With this level of education and certification, a graduate can obtain entry-level employment as a programmer.

Bachelor degree holders can obtain employment as sophisticated programmers that are capable of working on multidisciplinary projects, such as developing and advancing uses of virtual reality, extending human-computer interaction, or designing robots. These programmers are charged with instructing computers how to think by inputting a series of algorithms and other data, and making changes to those formulas when problems arise. They are proficient in the language of programming and be able to resolve problems “on the fly” using logical thinking and sequencing.

Those possessing a master’s degree may be promoted to a managerial position. A programmer with business experience may become a programmer-analyst or systems analyst.

Specialized knowledge and experience with a language or operating systems can lead to a computer programmer becoming a computer software engineer.
